Marit's parents had 5 boys and 5 girls. Marit's four sisters had proceeded her to this country and induced her to come. Marit's trip to America from Norway was by boat and rail and took 55 days. She came with Martin Aakran, her brother. She brought a bible, a home made blanket, fancy scarf, flower box, loaf sugar cutter and home made clothing with her. Coming to America in 1894, she found a job as a housekeeper at Voss, ND where she continued to work for three years, she then secured work as a domestic for a man named Hans Mohagen, who lived near Grafton, ND. She worked for this family for five y ears.

She came to Norwich, ND in 1902 and took up a claim in Section 7, 155-80 where she has continued to reside. In 1908 she made a trip back to Norway coming back to her home in 1908. The first home she lived in was a wooden home built by Arne Kringle in 1894. It was 13 x 12 and had 2 windows. She lived there until 1908. She used Wood fuel cut from the Mouse River hauled by her brother. She had a well for water dug in 1894 and made all her clothing at home except for her shoes. Her first crop was in 1894 and it was 161 bushels of flax.
