Baby, 2, killed as Father Backs His Car From Garage

Lucile Abens Crushed Under Wheels on Farm Near Lizard Lake

MANSON, May 7 — Lucile Abens, 2-year-old daughter of Waite and Maria Fenna Gerdes Abens, was fatally injured Tuesday when she was crushed under the wheels of an automobile driven by her father who was backing the car out of the garage at the Abens farm a mile south of Lizard lake.

The accident happened at 11:15 a.m. and the child died an hour later with a fractured skull and broken neck.

Abens was unaware his daughter was in the yard when he backed the car out of the garage. His wife was working in the garden and to be sure the girl would be safe he took her into the house before starting the auto.

The child was reported to have left the house after Abens entered the car and run behind it as he began backing out. A farmhand saw the girl and shouted a warning but Abens failed to hear it.

The child was crushed under two wheels on one side of the car. She was rushed to a Manson physician and died at 12:25 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at St. John's Lutheran church near Lizard Lake Friday at 2 p.m., following the services at the Abens home at 1:30 o'clock.
