Age 87, widow of Chris Aanonson who died of heart trouble. She was born in Ulvik Hardanger Norway and died in Swan Lake twp. She was a daughter of Peder Pederson and Guri Halvorson Vambeim. She married Chris Aanonson in 1885. He died January 10, 1915. Three children preceded her in death. She is survived by her sons Martin of Boone, IA and Aanon who lived at home and who cared for her during her long illness. She is also survived by her sister, Mrs. Ole Aanonson. She was a twin sister of the late Mrs. Knute Aanonson.

Funeral Services Are Held Today For Mrs. Aanonson

Funeral services were held this (Tuesday) afternoon for Mrs. Martha Aanonson , 87, widow of Chris Aanonson, of Emmet county. The services were held in the Immanuel Lutheran church with Rev. Peder Nordsletten in charge. Burial was in the High Lake cemetery.

Mrs. Aanonson passed away at her home on a farm in Swan Lake township, about five miles southeast of Gruver, early Sunday morning. Her death was attributed to heart trouble although she had been in poor health for several months. She is survived by two sons, Aanon Aanonson, with whom she made her home on the farm, and Martin Aanonson of boone. Mr. Aanonson preceded her in death several years ago. Mrs. Aanonson was born in Norway Dec. 22, 1852, when a young girl she came to this country to make her home. She has lived in Emmet county for the past fifty-one years. Martha Aanonson

Martha Aanonson was born in Ulvik Hardanger, Norway, Dec. 22, 1852, of parents Peder Pederson and Guri Halvorson Vambeim. She was baptized and confirmed in that country.

In 1882 she immigrated to America with her mother and two sisters and came to this community and was employed as a hired girl. In 1885 she was married to Chris Aanonson and lived on a 40 acre farm in Swan Lake Township that was purchased for $7.00 an acre and lived there fifty years. Mr. Aanonson passed away January 10, 1915. Martha Aanonson had been ill for some time and passed away Feb. 11, 1940, at the age of 87 years, 1 month and 11 days. Three children preceded their mother in death.

Those to mourn her departure are Martin of Boone, Ia.; and Aaron who lived at home and who so patiently cared for her during her long illness. She also leaves an aged sister, Mrs. Ole Aanonson and a host of relatives and friends. Mrs. Aanonson was a hard working woman and as an early settler endured many hardships that were typical of the pioneer days. She was a twin sister of the late Mrs. Knute Aanonson and as twins they were not separated from each other for 81 years.

The funeral was held Feb. 13, 1940. In the absence of the local pastor, Rev. Peder Nordsletten, who was ill, Rev. L.A. Mathre of Estherville officiated. A brief service was conducted at the home. The service proper was held at the Immanuel church. The audience sang, "I Know of a Sleep in Jesus' Name." A male quartette, composed of Leland Aanonson, Albert Wolden, Edgar Iverson, and Clarence Olson sang two selections, one of them was sung in the Norwegian language, and the other one was rendered in the American language.

Interment was made in High Lake cemetery. The six pallbearers were P.G. Paulson, S.G. Paulson, John O. Johnson, L.P. Peterson, Peter Aanonson and Halvor Peterson.

In memory of the departed Mrs. Martha Aanonson the following contributions were given: Mrs. Sara Aanonson and Miss Lena Aanonson to the Ebenezer Home for the Aged, Minneapolis, Minn. $4.00; Mr. and Mrs. L.S. Berge to the same home $2.00; Mr. and Mrs. A. Stueland and others $3.00 to the Beloit Orphanage, Beloit, Ia.
