NOTE: The Litchville History Book, 2000 lists the name as Aus. The stone shows Aas.

Another pioneer of the Litchville community has answered the final summons -- Mrs. Esten Estenson Aus departed this life at 12:40 o'clock p.m. on Friday, May 18th, following less than a week's illness with pneumonia.

Bertha Pederson Storhoff was born in Romedahl, Hedemarken,Norway, on the 15th day of January, 1849, being 74 years, 4 months, and 5 days of age when death claimed her. When twenty years of age, in 1869, she came to America, together with three of her brothers. They settled in Fillmore County, Minnesota, and the following year she became the bride of Esten Estenson Aus, a young farmer of that community.

Mr. and Mrs. Aus continued to live in Minnesota until the spring of 1881 when they moved to North Dakota locating on a homestead in the vicinity of what is now Hastings. They lived on the homestead until sixteen years ago, when they moved to this village whre they have made their home ever since.

Mrs. Aus was the mother of ten children, five of whom, together with the aged husband, survive to mourn her loss, namely: Mrs. Marie Johnson, Litchville; Emma, of Grafton; Emil of Litchville; Mrs. Sophie Erpestad of Windom, MN and Mrs. Martha Amundson of Canby, Oregon. Thirteen grandchildren also survive, among them the the three Gunderson girls, two of whom have spent the greater part of their lives with grandmother Aus - the youngest, Effie, since she was a little child three years of age.

The funeral was held on Tuesday afternoon, with services at the Immanuel Hall at 2 o'clock. Rev. L. O.. Lasseson, pastor of the church officiated and also sang a touching and appropriate selection. The church was crowded with friends who had come to pay their last respects to the departed one, and the profusion of beautiful flowers gave silent testimony of love and esteem. The remains wre laid to rest in the Griswold cemetery. Sivert Kulseth, Ole Hellesvig, Andrew Rorvig, Ole N. Haarsager, Ole

Mrs. Aus was a faithful wife, a kind and loving mother and a good neighbor and friend. Her long life was one of service and sacrifice, and if mortals may judge, her reward will be the coveted, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant; enter into the joy of thy Lord."
