Alan was born in Clarinda, Iowa, on February 21, 1934, to Vern and Edith Apple Abbott and served in the United States Marine Corps from 1953 to 1955. He attended Clarinda Community College, where he met his wife Helen Louise Golding. They were married on June 3, 1956, and moved to Council Bluffs, where Alan began working for IBM. He worked as a service technician for 35 years for IBM, retiring in 1991. Alan is a member of Broadway United Methodist Church.
He is preceded in death by his parents, brother, Jon Abbott, and an infant brother; and son-in-law Gary S. Jensen.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, H. Louise; daughter, Tammy Jensen, both of Council Bluffs; sons, Douglas Abbott, of Lake Tahoe and Brian Abbott and wife, Theresa, of Omaha; five grandchildren, and two step grandchildren; sister, Jean Negley and husband, Marvin, of Clarinda, nieces and nephews.
