Born Arthur Lee Whittington, he attended Cuero High School in Texas and played collegiate football at Southern Methodist University. Selected by the Oakland Raiders during the 7th round of the 1978 NFL Draft, he totaled 58 career regular season games. During his rookie season (1978), he produced career-highs with 661 rushing yards and 7 touchdowns. In 1980, he experienced a Super Bowl winning season with the Raiders. During the course of his career, he served as an effective special teams player on kickoff and punt returns. In addition to the NFL, Whittington played three seasons (1983 to 1985) with the Oakland Invaders of the United States Football League.
