Stanton Bernard Smith, 85, of Holyoke died February 10, 2009 at Regent Park Nursing and Rehab in Holyoke after a short battle with cancer.
He was born June 1, 1923 at Lamar, Nebraska, the oldest of nine children to Vernon and Leona (Daniels) Smith. He lived in the Holyoke area until his graduation from Holyoke High School in 1941. He enlisted in the United States Navy shortly thereafter and served proudly for seven years.
Stanton was a Pearl Harbor survivor, having visited friends on the USS Arizona the day before the attack. He left the service in 1948, having attained the rank of Chief Pharmacist's Mate.
He then enrolled in Creighton University in 1948 and received his Bachelor's of Science Degree in 1952. He later received his Masters of Education from University of Nebraska in Lincoln in 1964.
In 1949, he married Dorothy Jean Bradshaw, and to this union two children were born: Carl Vernon and Jane Lea.
Stanton taught multiple subjects at Chase County High School in Imperial, Nebraska from 1952-1965. He then became Superintendent of Schools at Hildreth, Nebraska where he stayed until 1976. He worked in Denver until his retirement in 1986.
He was a member of First Christian Church of Holyoke, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Masonic Lodge, Eagles and Elks Lodges and the Lions Club.
Stanton is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Sidney and Wendell.
He is survived by his wife Dorothy of Holyoke, son Carl and wife Sheryl of Omaha, Nebraska, daughter Jane Perdue and husband Rick of Pomona, Kansas; grandchildren Trevor Smith and wife Auli of Omaha, Nebraska, Rachel Coyle and husband Brian of Omaha, Nebraska and Justin Perdue of Pomona, Kansas; great grandchildren Owen and Brooke Coyle of Omaha, Nebraska; step-grandchildren Randy, Rebacca, Tara and Tiffany Perdue of Lawrence, Kansas; step-great granddaughter Malijah Brown-Perdue of Lawrence, Kansas.

Funeral service for Stanton was held Monday, February 16 at First Christian Church with Pastor Lou Encinias and Pastor Jim Blake officiating. Interment followed at Holyoke Memorial Park.
