Born August 20, 1901 in Olney, Illinois, he was a son of Balsam Marion and Martha Adeline (Misner) Bailey. He married Leila Schnonert in 1923 and together they had two daughters, May and Ruby. He later married Lela (Friend) Lippert on April 14, 1933; they had two children, Melvin and Marsha. Lela died on October 30, 1975. Four brothers, Charles, Riley Corbett and two infant brothers; two sisters, Hattie in infancy and Lela Ann Locke; two grandchildren, Ronald and Shirley Baker and one great-grandchild, Bobby Lee Bailey (FindaGrave #116478336) , preceded him in death.
Surviving are one son, Melvin L. of Havana; three daughters, Marsha A. Roberts of Morton, Ruby Yost of West Liberty, May Pollivar of Washburn; three stepdaughters, Eileen Eshelman of Havana, Eloise Toland of Germantown Hills, Estalee Maddox of Anthony, New Mexico; one stepson, Aaron Lippert of Havana; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and 23 step-great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are four sisters, Nellie Matthews of Forest City, Hazel (Dolph) Bland of Morton, Dorothy (Bernard) Bland of Greenup, Lillie (James) Stacey of Illiopolis; and two brothers, Harley (Alice) and Ray Everett (Ruby) both of Kilbourne.
Services were held Thursday, January 6, 1983 at Hurley Funeral Home. Burial was in Laurel Hill Cemetery.
