James Matthews Abernathy was born on January 19, 1923 in Maury County, Tennessee, the son of Fletcher Clayton Abernathy (1878–1958) and Alice Irene (Adkisson) Abernathy (1880–1964).

A 1941 graduate of Columbia Central High School, he was married about 1947 to Margaret "Sue" Bumpus (1929–2020).

He was a former employee of Maury Farmers Co-op and retired from E I DuPont in 1978 after fifteen years employment. He was a life-long member of Bigbyville United Methodist Church, was a former Sunday School Superintendent, and served on the Board of Trustees.

A farmer and resident of Columbia, Tennessee, he passed away on February 20, 2014 at Maury Regional Medical Center.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Alice Ann (Abernathy) Garber; brothers John Abernathy and Raymond Abernathy; and sisters Eleanor Abernathy and Grace (Abernathy) Peters.

Survivors included his wife, a son, daughter and her husband, son-in-law, six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and several nieces.

Funeral Services were held at Bigbyville United Methodist Church, with burial in McCains Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers include all members of Bigbyville United Methodist Church, neighbors of Sowell Hollow Road and Campbellsville Pike neighbors.
