Fletcher Clayton Abernathy, also seen as Fletcher Cape Abernathy, was born 28 Aug 1878 in Giles County, Tennessee. He was the son of John Wesley Abernathy and Katherine Alexander Tarpley of Giles County. He was the grandson of Coalson Abernathy, and great-grandson of James Abernathy. James was a member of the old Abernathy family of Virginia who moved from Brunswick County, Virginia to Giles County, Tennessee in 1817. Fletcher Abernathy joined in Holy Matrimony with Alice Irene Adkisson, daughter of Absalom Adkisson and Matilda Agnes Matthews, and they were blessed with the birth of five children: Mary Grace Abernathy Peters, Agnes Eleanor Abernathy, John Wesley Abernathy, Raymond Fletcher Abernathy, and James Matthews Abernathy. Shortly after they married, they purchased the old Matthews family farm on Campbellsville Pike near Bigbyville, which had recently belonged to her aunt, Lizzie J. Matthews Hart. Fletcher engaged in farming on the family farm for the remainder of his life. The farm was passed on to their son, Matthews, who still owns and operates it. Fletcher and Irene were members of the Bigbyville Methodist Church. He passed away on 1 Nov 1958 and was buried in the McCains Cemetery, near Bigbyville in Maury County.
