Mrs. Zona Abel Found Dead At Home Near Spencerville
The funeral of the late Mrs. Zona Abel, who was found dead last Friday at her home south of Spencerville, was held Sunday at the Walter mortuary in Spencerville. Rev. W. H. Baker of the Spencerville Lutheran church officiated and burial was made in nearby White City cemetery.
Mrs. Abel lived alone since the death of her husband, Ross Abel, some years ago. The rural mail carrier, Wm. Erick of Spencerville, drove up the lane of the farm Thursday to deliver a Christmas package. He left the mail on the back porch, but did not try to call Mrs. Abel. He heard the radio in the house. When he again went to the Abel home Friday morning, he found that the mail from the previous day had not been picked up. He went to the kitchen door and saw Mrs. Abel's body on the floor. He summoned neighbors and a physician.
The coroner, Dr. C. B. Hathaway of Butler, also was called and he decided that death took place Thursday forenoon. Mrs. Abel had baked Christmas cookies and evidently started to cook the noonday meal when she collapsed and died. An electric burner on the kitchen range had burned through a cooking utensil.
Dr. Hathaway said Mrs. Abel suffered from heart disease for the last six years. She was 71 years old.
Mrs. Abel was born on the farm where she died and there are no immediate survivors.
She taught school for 18 years and she was a member of the Lutheran church.
