Ada Lola Achen was born on April 21, 1916 in Chester, SD to Ervin and Emma Laun. She lived a full and interesting life always being near family. She had an early career as a nurse aide in Evansville, Indiana prior to moving back home to South Dakota where she worked at Methodist Hospital in Mitchell. Her sister encouraged her to meet Paul Achen from Kimball, and they were wed in August 1958. She was married to Paul for 14 short years until his untimely death in 1972. During the time she lived in Kimball she and Paul owned and operated Achen's Food Market and Achen's Variety Store. She sold both businesses before moving back to Mitchell in 1979 to once again be near her family. She was known for lifelong devotion of giving to friends, neighbors, acquaintances and most importantly, her family that she loved so much.

Ada is preceded in death by her husband Paul; parents, Ervin and Emma Laun; sisters: Helen and Berdene; brother, Alvin; and her stepdaughter, Betty. She is survived by her daughter, Judith Markhardt (Clarence, deceased); son, Larry; stepsons: Robert "Bobby" and Melvin, stepdaughter Margaret; grandsons, Terry, Craig, and Jason; great-grandchildren, Jordan, Nicole, Kylie, Madyson and Natalie; and numerous step grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family she loved.
