Helen Hartvikson was born May 2, 1917, in Wolford, the daughter of Hartvik and Inga (Ottem) Hartvikson. She graduated from high school in Knox. She studied nursing at St. Michael’s School of Nursing in Grand Forks. She married Stanley Aarestad Nov. 29, 1943, in Little Rock, Ark. They lived in Santa Ana, Calif., Jamestown, N.D., Watertown, S.D., Brookings, S.D., and Flandreau, S.D., where she worked as a registered nurse. He died in 1981. She returned to Watertown, S.D., where she worked ant Jenkin’s Living Center, until she retired in 1987. She later moved to Fargo, where she worked as a home nurse.
She is survived by a son, Ted, Council Bluffs, Iowa; four daughters, Patricia Venema, Norco, Calif., Judy Vockrodt (Maury), Watertown, S.D.; Betty Knutson (Larry) and Joyce Freesmann, all Estelline, S.D.; three brothers, Hjalmer, Bottineau, Gordon (Agnes), Fargo, and Arthur (Lorraine), Sardis, British Columbia, Canada; a sister, Rubelle (Howard) Tefre, Plentywood, Mont.; a sister-in-law, Eileen Hartvikson, Seattle, Wash.; 16 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a sister, Adelaide Braasch, and a brother, Donald.
Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Crawford Funeral Chapel, Watertown, S.D., with the Revs. Gilbert Ricter and Joe Hobbs officiating. Visitation 2 to 9 p.m. Thursday, and before services Friday, at the funeral home. Burial: Mt. Hope Cemetery, Watertown, S.D.
