Billy Wayne Abernathy, 85 of Athens, passed away on Wednesday, February 15th, 2023, at his residence. Mr. Abernathy was born on August 19th, 1937, in Athens, to Van and Lurleen Browning Abernathy.

Mr. Abernathy is survived by his wife Shirley Herron Abernathy; children Steve & (JoLynne) Abernathy, Sandra & (Mike) Gaines, and Jason & (Holly) Abernathy; grandchildren Adam & (Keysha) Hall, Josh Hall, Leigh & (Dave) Morrill, Amy & (Wes) Coleman, Ryne Abernathy, and Cade Abernathy; and great-grandchildren Eli Morrill, Lillie Morrill, Zeke Morrill, Jake Morrill, Makena Hall, Noah Hall, Carter Sylvester, Oakley Sylvester, Blair Hall, Cannon Hall, and Ruby Lynne Coleman.

He is preceded in death by his parents Lurleen & Van Abernathy; brothers Robert Abernathy, Louis Abernathy, Kenneth Abernathy, Jimmy Abernathy, Van Abernathy, Jr., and Willard Abernathy; and sister Ruby Lawler.

Funeral services for Mr. Abernathy will be Tuesday, February 21st, 2023, at 11:00am at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home, with Steve Abernathy, Gary Anderson, and Daryll Brooks officiating. Visitation will be Monday, February 20th, from 6:00-8:00pm at the funeral home. Burial will be at Roselawn Cemetery.

Billy was a lifelong member and deacon of Northside Church of Christ. He and his wife enjoyed planning bus tours, and traveling. His greatest pleasure was watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren play in their sporting events.
