James Lowery Abbott, 84, of Jerseyville, died early Wednesday morning, Oct. 20, 2004, at Jerseyville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

He was born May 9, 1920, in Kane, the son of Edison Lynn and Hattie Dunham Abbott He married Ruth Wolfe on June 20, 1942, in St. Charles, Mo., and she survives.

He is also survived by two daughters, Trudy (husband, George) Dunham and Ellen (husband, Thomas) La Plant, both of Godfrey; two sons, Mark (wife, Sherry) and Morris, both of Jerseyville; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Edith Arlena Kincaid of Alton and Alice Mapes of Jacksonville. He was preceded in death by one son, David L. (surviving wife, Eileen of Fieldon); one great-grandson; three sisters, Ethel Sprowell, Thelma Varble and Catherine Abbott; four brothers, Earl Edison, Alvin, Christy Lynn and Richard; and four siblings in early childhood and infancy.

After serving his county during World War II with the U.S. Army Air Corps, Mr. Abbott returned home where he began a 40-year career as an auto body technician. He began working at Sunderland Motor Co. in Jerseyville, where he was employed for more than 20 years, before achieving a dream of opening his own shop, Abbott Auto Body, located on East Spruce Street in Jerseyville, until retiring in 1991. During this time he also operated a farm near Kane, where he enjoyed the land, gardening and coon hunting.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville, with burial at Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville. Military services will be provided by Jerseyville American Legion Post 492, of which he was a charter member. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the First Assembly of God Church in Jerseyville, or to the American Cancer Society.
