Col. Richard Henry Abbott, 49 years old of Petersburg, member of Governor Lowden's staff, veteran of the Spanish-American war, expert rifleman, and one of the most prominent and responsivle electricians in the Middle West, died at St. John's hospital at 4:30 o'clock yesterday morning following an operation for relief from appendicitis.

His death removes one of the most active militiamen in Illinois.

Upon the delcaration of war against Germany, Governor Lowden intusted to Colonel Abbot, who was then a major, the organizing of the reserve militia companies. He was also put in charge of all rifle practice in the state.

He became suddenly ill with appendicitis late Saturday night, April 12. The next day, he was brought to St. John's hospital in Springfield and operated upon. It was believed that he would be about again in a few days, but after a week's time, he relapsed and gradually sank. Friday noon relatives gave up hope for his recovery. He lapsed into unconsiousness from which he did not survive.

Colonel Abbott was associated with his two brothers in the Abbott Light and Power company of Petersburg of which he was president and general manager. This concern supplies fifteen towns in Menard and Mason counties.

He was also president of the Petersburg Commercial association, secretary of the National Rifle association of America and former secretary of Illinois State Electric association and member of the Knights of Pythias Woodmen, Court of Honor and of the Masons.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mabel W. Abbott; one son, Richard jr.; two brothers, Ira R. Abbott, of Petersburg; A.E. Abbott, of Mason City; and one sister, Mrs. Frank A. McCarty, of Quincy.

Funeral services were held for him at Petersburg Episcopal church.

Interment was made in Rose Hill cemetery.
