Norman Rusten was born on July 7, 1909, at the home of his grandmother in Maple Bay, Minnesota. He was the son of Nettie Wilson Rusten and Richard Rusten. Norman's father, Richard died when Norman was less than 3 years old. Norman had one sister, Myrtle Rusten Portz as well as 2 half-sisters; Amanda and Syrine Rusten. After the death of Richard Rusten, Norman's mother married Benjamin Tereau. Nettie and Benjamin had 7 children. Syrine Rusten died in infancy and Amanda Rusten went to live with other relatives
so Norman was the oldest of 9 children. He grew up in Ebro, Minnesota where he attended the Ebro School. After the death of his stepfather, Benjamin, Norman continued to live in Ebro with his mother and the younger children. Later Norman contracted Tuberculosis and spent many years at the TB Sanitorium; Ah Gwah Ching, in Walker, Minnesota. While there, Norman learned to crochet...a hobby he continued even after he was released Norman was a mail carrier for many years and drove the mail truck from Bemidji to McIntosh, Minnesota.

Norman died of Pulmonary Edema on November 13, 1975 in Bemidji, Minnesota. Services were held on Saturday, November 15, 1975 at the Cease Family Funeral Chapel in Bagley, Minnesota, with Pastor George Gilbertson officating. Pastor George Gilbertson was also the soloist, accompanied by organist; Mrs. Hyrom Sorenson.

He was buried in the Bagley City Cemetery near his half brother, Joseph Tereau and his mother, Nettie Wilson Rusten Tereau. His pall bearers were George Nelson, Woodrow Portz, Wallert Netland, Emil Murray, William Murray and Boyd McLarty.
