AUTO INJURIES PROVE FATAL
Mrs. W. A. Abbott Dies in Osceola Hospital on Thursday, Jan. 5.
FUNERAL ON MONDAY
Leaves Husband, Two Sons, Brother and Sister and Grandchildren.

Mrs. W. A. Abbott passed away at a hospital in Osceola, Iowa, Thursday morning, Jan. 5, 1939, from injuries received in an automobile accident near Osceola, a day or two before Christmas, while she and her husband were en route to Kansas City, Mo., to spend Christmas with their son, Welcome Abbott jr., and his family. The details regarding the accident were recited in these columns at the time of the accident. Mrs. Abbott suffered a skull fracture but was apparently making some progress towards recovery, when suddenly heart complications developed and death claimed her without a minute's warning.

The remains were brought to the Kreussel funeral home at Lamont, and services were held in the Catholic church in Lamont Monday morning at 10 o'clock, Rev. Father Wiehl, pastor of the church, had charge of the services. The remains were then placed in the receiving vault in Oakland cemetery in Manchester, to be laid to rest in the family lot in St. Mary's cemetery here, in the spring.

Matilda, daughter of the late Frederick and Augusta Klonus, pioneers of Manchester, was born on a farm in Richland township, Delaware county, on Aug 2, 1870. When she was a mere infant a few days old her people came to Manchester, where she grew to young womanhood and where she received her education, graduating from the local high school with the class of 1888.

Her marriage with Welcome Abbott occurred in Manchester on Jan. 31, 1894, the Rev. Father J. J. Hanley performing the ceremony. Mr. Abbott was employed as pharmacist in the drug store of the late H. C. Smith at that time. In 1906 Mr. and Mrs. Abbott moved to Lamont, where the former again engaged in the drug store business. One year previous to 1925 Mr. and Mrs. Abbott spent in Omaha, Neb.

In 1925 Mr. Abbott was named custodian of the Devil's Backbone state park, and he and Mrs. Abbott have since made their home in the park, near Lamont.

Mrs. Abbott is survived by the husband, two sons, Welcome Abbott jr. of Kansas City, Mo., and Donald Abbott of Sious City; three grandchildren, one brother Charles Klonus and one sister, Mrs. Wm. Donnelly of Council Bluffs, Iowa.

When news of the accident reached Manchester many friends were greatly concerned over the serious condition of both Mrs. Abbott and her husband. Word from the hospital at Osceola seemed to indicate that both Mr. and Mrs. Abbott were on the road to complete recovery. The sons of Mr. and Mrs. Abbott spent New Years's with them and were given assurance that the parents were on the road in recovery. On Thursday morning Mrs. Abbott had written cards to her children and brother when the heart collapsed and she passed away.

Mrs. Abbott had been an able assistant to her husband in handling the detailed records of the park management and took care of the correspondence incident to duties of the custodian. Not only was Mrs. Abbott efficient in this line of work but when state officials called at her home, she proved herself a most gracious host. Like her husband, she found great delight in meeting so many of the visitors to the park and through her gracious hospitality she endeared herself to thousands who had the pleasure of knowing her so will in life. These friends will miss Mrs. Abbott upon their visits to the park custodian's home in the future and deeply sympathize with Mr. Abbott and his family in the great sorrow that has come to them at this time.
