William Humphrey Was Auburn Man
William B. Humphrey, 83, died March 11, 2000 at his home in Auburn.
William Bert Humphrey was born Oct. 22, 1916 at Humbolt, the son of Jesse and Flossie (McVay) Humphrey
He attended and graduated from the Auburn Public Schools.
On Aug. 3, 1939, William was married to Nellie Mae Franck. Four children were born to this union. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in August 1999.
On May 6, 1944, he was called into the U.S. Armed Forces. Humphrey received his honorable discharge on Dec. 12, 1944.
After the service, he returned to Auburn and worked with his father in Humphrey and Son Plumbing. After his father retired, Bill continued operating the business until 1953, when he went to work for the Auburn Board of Public Works. He was employed for 18 years by the BPW and was a supervisor when he retired in 1981.
Humphrey was a member of the Auburn Christian Church for 45 years, and of American Legion Post No. 23 and Eagles Aerie No. 3767.
Surviving are his wife, Nellie Humphrey; daughter Beverly Jean Rhoades and her husband Everett of Ottawa, Kans.; son Larry Humphrey and wife Nancy of Wymore; son-in-law Keith Fryer of Lander, Wyo.; eight grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, three step-great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; brother Amel Humphrey of Idaho Falls, Idaho; sister Ora Adcock of Nebraska City; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 16 at Casey-Witzenburg Chapel in Auburn, conducted by Rev. Frank Zimmerman.
Burial will follow in Sheridan Cemetery, near Auburn.
