Lifelong Alaskan MICHAEL OSKOLKOFF JR., 70, died Sept. 3, 2001, at Central
Peninsula General Hospital in Soldotna after a lengthy illness. A memorial
Panahida service was at the Transfiguration of Our Lord Orthodox church in
Ninilchik. A visitation and funeral were held at the church. Archpriest
Marcarius Targonsky officiated. Honorary pallbearers were Thomas Culhane,
William Bouwens Sr., Jack Kvasnikoff Sr. and Larry Oskolkoff Jr. Active
Pallbearers included Everette Pinnow, Brian Miller, Greg Encelewski, Ivan
Encelewski and Jack Kvasnikoff Jr.
Mr. Oskolkoff, known to his family and close friends as ''Miner,'' was born July
19, 1931, in Ninilchik to the Rev. Michael Oskolkoff and Matushka Zoya. He was educated in Alaska and California, completing two years of college. In 1966, he attended St. Tikhon's Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania to further assist his father and church with services. His family wrote: ''He was clever, inventive, resourceful and met challenges head-on.
He was a commercial fisherman originally using fishtraps, then went on to use beach set nets and finally drift netting. He was a journeyman carpenter, had his own remodeling business, worked on the trans-Alaska pipeline, and continued working in the building trade until retirement.
''He had a great sense of humor and loved to tell stories. He loved the great outdoors, hunting, and especially fishing and being on the water. He was devoted to his family and will be part of our lives always.''
Mr. Oskolkoff is survived by his wife of 34 years, Patricia Oskolkoff; his
daughters, Jennifer Miller and Christina Demidoff; grandchildren, Alicia and
Michael; brother, Arnold Oskolkoff of Kenai; and sisters, Nancy Ahlrich of
Kenai, Ella Woodhead, Alice Bouwens and Carolyn Reifsnyder, all of Anchorage; and many nieces and nephews. Arrangements were by Peninsula Memorial Chapels.
