Roy Duane Aasen, 78, of Bowman, ND passed away October 16, 2012 at Southwest Healthcare in Bowman shortly after being diagnosed with cancer. Funeral services for Roy will be at 10:00 am on Saturday, October 20, 2012 at the Bowman Lutheran Church. Pastors Galen Strand and Charles Swanson will officiate with burial to follow in the Bowman Cemetery. A Family and Friends Service will be held on Friday, October 19, 2012 at the Krebsbach and Kulseth Funeral Chapel in Bowman. Roy was born on May 9, 1934, to Magnus and Marie Aasen in Rhame, ND. He grew up on a farm southeast of Bowman and attended Eden country school. After graduating, Roy began farming full time with his brothers. Roy married Dorothy White, of Omaha, Nebraska, in Thurman, Iowa, on September 27, 1958. In 1959, Roy and Dorothy bought a farm a couple miles south of his brothers' farm, and Roy began farming and ranching on his own. In addition to operating his own farm, Roy did custom hay grinding and combining for about 12 years in the 1960s and 1970s. Roy and Dorothy had their first and only child, Roxanne, in 1969. They lived on the farm southeast of Bowman until 1981 when they bought a house in Bowman. It was at this time that Roy and Dorothy also owned the Tastee Freeze in Bowman, which they operated for 12 years while Roy continued to farm full time. Roy was a farmer his entire life and at age 74, Roy retired from farming and in June of 2009 he had is farm equipment auction. Roy was a member of the Township Board, the Bowman Lutheran Church, the Elks Club, and the Farmer's Union Board of Directors. Roy enjoyed simple things in life, including a hard day's work, dancing, listening to good country/western or Christian music, going out for breakfast, playing cards with friends at the coffee shop, watching a good baseball game, and getting together with friends and family. After retirement, Roy continued to enjoy these things, but he especially enjoyed spending time with his two grandchildren Parker Roy and Presley Anne Faris. He spent hours holding them as babies, and as they grew older, he spent as much time as he could playing with them and making sure they were "well-spoiled." It is quite likely that Roy spent more time playing as a grandpa than he ever did as a child. Roy also enjoyed taking short trips away from home with his wife Dorothy, taking care of his lawn, attending Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks baseball games, and having coffee with friends. Roy once said that two of his goals in life were to harvest 50 bushel/acre wheat and to have a farm sale. To his satisfaction, he accomplished both. Roy always wore a smile and was never happier than when spring time came around so that he could "get in the field" and begin planting the season's wheat crop. But, his most favorite time of year was harvest. Of course Roy was always thrilled to harvest a high-yielding crop, but he also enjoyed harvesting wheat in the not-so-good years because wheat farming was his true passion. Roy was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Maxine (Ralph) Paulson, Hilda (Harry) Johnson, Helen (Don) Peters, and Arlene (Wesley) Johnson, his brothers Olaf Aasen, Kaare (Pauline) Aasen, Kenneth Aasen, two child siblings, and a brother-in-law Leo Rafferty. He is survived by his wife Dorothy, his daughter and son-in-law Roxanne and Justin Faris and his two grandchildren Parker and Presley Faris of West Fargo, ND, his sister Agnes Rafferty of Bowman, ND, his sister-in-law Linda Aasen of Rapid City, SD, and many nieces and nephews.
