Our beloved mother and grandmother, Anita Abegglen, 99, died March 18, 2014, at the Rexburg Homestead Assisted Living Center.
Anita was born September 20, 1914, at Bonner, Montana to Waldemar John Orlob and Edna Gwendolyn Shields Orlob. She was the middle child in her family with an older brother Milton Orlob and a younger brother William Orlob. She remembered a wonderful childhood growing up in St. Anthony, Idaho, where she was a lifelong resident.
After graduating high school Anita married her sweetheart, Glen Abegglen, on November 23, 1932. They had spent over 74 years together when Glen died on January 9, 2007. They were blessed with two daughters, Karen and Jill.
Anita and Glen believed the key to a strong marriage was doing things together. They loved dancing, skiing, traveling, golfing and working together. In the late 1930's they started skiing at Bear Gulch. Every year they would go to Sun Valley for a week of skiing. They later enjoyed skiing at Grand Targhee.
Anita first started golfing in 1953 at Pinecrest golf course in Idaho Falls. She remembered picking rocks off the Rexburg Municipal golf course when it was first developed. She and Glen were also involved with the development of the Fremont County Golf Course, where they spent many happy hours together golfing. She continued to golf into her 90's.
In 1956, Anita became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. On March 8, 1957, she and Glen were sealed in the Idaho Falls Temple. She was a faithful member the rest of her life, serving in many callings.
She sang with the St. Anthony Melodairs, was active in the St. Anthony Women's Club and the Fremont County Golf Association.
Anita was always very active and at one point had logged over 15,000 miles bicycling with her sister-in-law, Paulleen Abegglen.
Anita and Glen owned and operated the Chevron gas station on Bridge Street in St. Anthony for 45 years. They made many wonderful friends there. After they retired and sold the station, they enjoyed spending winters in Arizona.
Anita was quick to appreciate the beauty of the world and people around her. Anita was adored and loved by all who knew her. Anita has friends of all ages.
Anita's life has blessed her family with many happy memories. She was very involved in gathering her family together. Sunday nights with Nana and Grandpa Glen for popcorn, birthday parties, ski trips, golfing, swimming at the sandbar, and most of all teaching us all how to celebrate and love Pioneer Day in St. Anthony. She was an extraordinary woman who lived a long, full life. Her influence on her family's lives will be felt forever. Anita's daughters, grandchildren, great and great-great grandchildren were the pride and joy of Anita's life. The legacy of Anita's kind spirit, passion for living, love of the gospel, and zest for life will live on through them.
Anita is survived by her daughters, Karen Sue (Tom) Webster of Rexburg, Jill Kaye (Delbert) Bowlin of Green Forest, Arkansas, 6 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 21, at the St. Anthony LDS Stake Center, 247 East 400 North. The family will receive friends Friday from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. at the stake center prior to services. Burial will be in the Riverview Cemetery under the direction of Bert Flamm Mortuary.
