Erwin was born on August 15, 1913 at Cooperstown, North Dakota, the son of Serina (Tengesdal and Torkel Aarestad. He grew up and received his education in the McHenry area. Erwin later served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in North Dakota. He enrolled in a short course in Mechanical Engineering at the then North Dakota Agricultural College and was employed by Meinhardt Repair, Gwinner. Later he had his own shop at Kindred, North Dakota.
Erwin was united in marriage to Eleanor Anderson in Fargo on August 15, 1942. They lived in Fargo where he was employed by Dakota Tractor followed by two years with the Zeigler Company in Crookston, Minnesota. In 1947, the family moved to a farm near Forman, North Dakota where they lived for nine years. From that time until his retirement in 1986m Erwin was employed by Butler Machinery and Gremada Industries.
He is survived by his wife, Eleanor, of Harwood; four sons and two daughters: Bruce Aarestad, Fargo; Wayne (Debbie) Aarestad, Fargo and Aurora, Colorado; Dean Aarestad, Aurora, Colorado; Dale Aarestad, Colorado Springs, Colorado; Janna (Larry) Andrews, Farmington, Michigan; Karen Aarestad, MD (John Dastmalchian), Riverside, California. Erwin is further survived by five grandchildren; one brother, Wilfred (Thelma) Aarestad, Jamestown; one sister, Agnes (Gordon) Hartvikson, Fargo; two brothers-in-law, Orval (Rebecca) Sorenson, Bagley, Minnesota and Vern Tiemans, Brea, California; two sisters-in-law, Maxine (Selmer) Aarestad, Fargo and Helen (Stan) Aarestad, Watertown, South Dakota; one step-brother, Paul (Emma) Baker, Jamestown; and one step-sister, Myra (Warren) Foster, Pingree, North Dakota and many nieces and nephews. Erwin was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.
