WATHENA -- Clarence P. Abbett, 88, Troy, died Tuesday, Aug. 24, 1999, at a Kansas City, Kan., hospital.

Mr. Abbett was a truck farmer and he raised livestock in Doniphan County.

He was born on Nov. 20, 1910, in Troy, the son of John M. and Bertha Benitz Abbett. He was a lifelong Doniphan County resident.

Mr. Abbett was active in 4-H work and he founded the 4-H Club in Severance. He later was a 4-H leader in Wathena and he was active in Teen Town at Leona. He was a former member of the Burr Oak Baptist Church north of Wathena.

He married Nellie Moser on May 3, 1931, north of Wathena. She survives.

Other survivors include two sons, Gerald P. Abbett, at home, and Richard L. Abbett, Liberty, Mo.; three daughters, Ruth N. Krier, Atchison, Carol J. Kuechman, Arlington, Texas, and Betty A. Vollmer, Grandview, Mo.; a sister, Ernestine Goldsberry, Green Valley, Ariz.; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great-great- grandchild.

Mr. Abbett was preceded in death by a son, Larry Abbett.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Harman-Rohde Funeral Home in Wathena.

Burial will be at the Bellemont Cemetery in Wathena.

Mr. Abbett will lie in state at the funeral home until service time, where relatives and friends will meet from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer Foundation and sent in care of the funeral home.
