SFC Floyd I. Sutton, Sr., 75, of Columbus passed away of natural causes Wednesday, May 3, 2006 at Martin Army Community Hospital. Graveside funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 5, 2006 at Fort Benning Main Post Cemetery with Reverend Tom Owensby officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at McMullen Funeral Home, 3874 Gentian Blvd., Columbus.
Born in Rochelle, Wilcox County, Georgia, Floyd was the son of the late Charles Otis Sutton and Minnie Bagwell Sutton. He married Laverne Poss on July 1, 1955. He served twenty years in the U. S. Army. During his military career he served two tours in Korea, and was awarded several medals and commendations. He later retired after sixteen years with Sol-Loeb Wholesale Grocery Co. of Columbus.
Survivors include his wife of fifty years, Laverne Sutton; three sons, Floyd, Jr., Randy, and Shon; a daughter, Donna; four grandsons, Chris Barkdull (Susan), MM3 Curtis Barkdull, James Barkdull, and Dustin Sutton; a granddaughter, Emily Sutton; five great grandchildren, Paxton Barkdull, Ethan Barkdull, Brendon Barkdull, Lily Barkdull, and Madison Barkdull; four brothers, James Sutton, Johnny Sutton, Otis Sutton, and Billy Sutton; five sisters, Annette Abbott, Dorothy Terry, Robbie Terry, Alice Brooks, and Marion Herring; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family requests memorial donations in lieu of flowers to Fairview Baptist Church, 2913 Reese Road, Columbus, GA 31907.
