Marion Lanier Hitt, 73, died Monday at her residence after a short illness. The Bulloch County native worked for 22 years in the Department of Family and Children Services, 18 of those years as director and was named a manager of the year for the 23-county Region Nine of DFACS. She served on the advisory boards of Willingway Hospital, the United Way and Homebound Services. In 1982 she was named "Mother of the Year" in a community wide contest and was recently a recipient of a Deen Day Smith Award. She was a member of the Statesboro First United Methodist Women, had served on the administrative board and held numerous other leadership positions.
Survivors include one daughter, Harriet H. Elliott, Tupelo, Miss.; two sons, George C. Hitt III and Edward L. Hitt, both of Statesboro; one sister, A.K. Amason, Statesboro; one brother, Robert Lanier, Statesboro; seven grandchildren and one great-grandson.
The funeral will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Statesboro First United Methodist Church with Dr. Hugh Davis and Rev. Fred Maddox officiating. Burial will be in Eastside Cemetery. Nephews will serve as pallbearers.
