Mr. Fred T. Lanier, a pioneer of Bulloch County, died Saturday morning, May 5, about 9:40 o'clock at his home in Statesboro, after a long illness. He was 84 years of age.

Mr. Lanier was born and reared in Bulloch County where he taught school, and was a leader in church, legal business, educational, political and community affairs for more than sixty years.

Before entering the University of Georgia, he taught school in Emanuel and Bulloch counties for a short time. He graduated from the University in Athens in 1900 with a degree in law. He came back to Statesboro and began the practive of law in 1901. Since that time his life has been one of service. He served in the Georgia Legislature for two terms from 1915 through 1918. For eight years he served as solicitor of the City Court of Statesboro; then for eight years he served as solicitor of the Ogeechee Circuit of the Superior Court. His service to education consisted of twenty-five years as chairman of the City Board of Education. In business he served as a director of the First National Bank of Statesboro, then with the merger of that bank with the Bank of Statesboro, he continued as an official of the merged banks. With the organization of the Bulloch County Bank in 1934, Mr. Lanier became a director and recently he was made an honorary director of that bank. He was president of the Georgia Bankers Association in 1929-1930.

His most active participation was in the affairs of the church, for he served as either a member of the board of stewards or as a trustee for fifty-three years, since 1909.

Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Ruby Simmons Lanier, Statesboro; three daughters, Mrs. Hubert Amason, Mrs. George Hitt, Statesboro, Mrs. Roy Adams, Claxton; two sons, Fred T. Jr. and Robert S. Lanier, Statesboro; a sister, Mrs. Effie Wilson, Statesboro; a brother, Remer D. Lanier, Statesboro; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mr. Lanier were held Sunday afternoon, May 6, at 4 o'clock from the Statesboro First Methodist Church with Rev. Eugene Cariker conducting services. Burial was in the East Side Cemetery, Statesboro.

The body remained at the family residence on Zetterower Avenue until the funeral hour. The Smith-Tillman Mortuary of Statesboro was in charge of arrangements.
