He was a lifelong resident of Statesboro, a graduate of Statesboro High School, the University of Georgia and the University of Georgia Law School. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
He was a practicing attorney since 1949 and served as Solicitor General of Bulloch State Court for 20 years. He was a member of the State Bar of Georgia, the Ogeechee Circuit Bar Association, the Bulloch County Bar Association, Sigma Chi Fraternity, and Snooky's Coffee Club. He was a lifelong member of Statesboro First United Methodist Church and the widower of Doris H. Lanier.
Survivors: three sons and two daughters-in-law, Paul Lanier of Atlanta, Robert Simmons Lanier Jr and Barbara Nelson of Claxton, Fred and Lynn Lanier of Atlanta; a daughter, Ellen Lanier of Atlanta; a sister, Alice Katherine Amason of Statesboro; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Fred T. Lanier Jr. of Statesboro; four grandchildren and many other relatives.
Funeral: 11 a.m. Wednesday at Statesboro First United Methodist Church, burial in Eastside Cemetery.
