Charles Herman Shonfelt was born 18 April 1894 in Sumner, Bremer County, Iowa. He was the second of ten children born to Frederick William Schonfeldt and Wilhelmina "Mina or Minnie" Westpfahl. Fred and Mina were German immigrants who came to the US with their families; met and married in Iowa in 1892. Their names were generally anglicized; the name Schonfeldt was spelled with an umlaut. During WWI anti-German sentiment caused Charles to change the spelling to Shonfelt which seemed less German. Other family members changed back to the original but Charles did not.
