Martha, or Mattie as she was called, was 7th of the 10 children born to David Worthly Mitchem, Sr. and Martha Ann Willett Mitchem of Lowell, NC. Mattie was a tall, beautiful woman, twice married, first to Samuel "Sam" E. Winget and secondly to Albert I. Armstrong of Belmont, NC. She was killed in an automobile accident on Franklin Boulevard near what is now its intersection with Armstrong Park Road. She was the mother of one son, James Mitchem Winget 10/1/1916 1/24/1981 (m. Maye Ledford). Her grandson was James Mitchem Winget, Jr. b. 3/13/1943 (m. Anna Gay Anderson). Their 3 children are: Anna Gay Winget Vasadze b. 6/3/1963; James Mitchem Winget, III "Mitch" b. 1/14/1966 (m. Christie Michelle Zitzmann); and Lisa Louise Winget Kagattyta b. 9/29/1969 (all of Luling, LA). Mattie was a woman of strong faith and religious conviction. She was much loved and respected.
