Ed was the 6th of 10 children born to his parents, David Worthly Mitchem, Sr. and Martha Ann Willett Mitchem of Lowell, NC. He was married for almost 50 years to the former Mae Rhinehart. They were the parents of two sons: Robert Eugene "Bobby" Mitchem and Edward Clarence ("Mike") Mitchem, Jr. They had 4 grandchildren. Ed served in the U.S. Army during WWI. He owned and operated Mitchem's Market on Main Street in Brevard, NC. They made their home for many years on Thomas Street in Brevard. He was a tall and very handsome gentle man. His nickname was "Still" because he was such a quiet man. He loved to hunt and fish and was a devoted husband and father.
