He was married at the Lowell Baptist Church, Lowell, NC on 9/24/1902, to Trannie Elizabeth Featherstone of Belmont, NC. They were the parents of four children: Lottie Bryte (1904 - 1983 m. Irvey O. Wallace); Ernest Paul (1906 - 1966 m. Kathleen Rankin); Minnie Mae (1910 - 1943 m. Noel A. Thompson); and Joseph William "J.W.", Jr. ( 1917 - 1970 m. Pauline Judd Stuart).
