Fridtjov "Fritz" Gilbertsen, 84, of P. O. Box 338, Cathlamet, died Feb. 8, 1885, in a Cathlamet nursing home. He was born Sept. 26, 1910 at Puget Island to Jergen and Hannah Bendicksen Gabrielsen.
His parents emigrated from Harstad, Norway in 1908. Of their 7 children, he was the first born in America. He grew up on Puget Island and attended Benson High School in Portland. Beginning in the 1950s, he was a commercial fisherman on the Columbia River, and operated a purse seiner in southeast Alaska, retiring in the 1970s. A skilled carpenter and boat builder, he operated the Puget Island Boat Works for many years with his brother, Gunder Gabrielsen. He and his wife were active members of the Sons of Norway Lodge on Puget Island. He enjoyed playing the accordion. He lived in Columbia View Nursing home the last several years due to ill health.
He married Ina who died after nearly 60 years of marriage. Also deceased are two sisters and four brothers. Surviving are a daughter, Nadine Zackrisson of Kirkland, WA; three sons, Gary L. Gilbertsen and Gene L. Gilbertsen of Puget Island, and Neal Gilbertsen of Juneau, AK, 9 grand children; and 8 great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life service will be at 1:30 pm Saturday, March 11, at United Church of Christ in Cathlamet (Congregational), with Rev. Joan Ham officiating. Entombment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Cathlamet.
