Alton "Gale" was born on November 5, 1912 in Hamlin County, South Dakota to William and Grace (Prouty) West. He was dark haired and brown eyed. While working in Montevideo, MN at an ice cream plant, he met his future wife, Helen Cushman and they were married. They had twelve children together: Roger Alton, Denis William, David Ernest, Alton Galen Jr., Marjorie Marie, Wesley Francis, Steven Jon, Myron Burdette, Mary Helen, Matha Ellen, and Anita Pearl.
