Mae was born January 9, 1890 to William and Grace (Prouty) West in Polk County, Wisconsin.
She moved with her family to South Dakota when she was 10 years old. She had dark hair and brown eyes. She was athletic and helped her father build thier new house in Dakota. She married James Abbott, the son of a family frined back in Wisconsin, and they lived together for about 12 years before divorcing.
They had four children:Bessie Elizabeth, Joseph Burdette, Virginia Pearl, and Walter Eugene. She remarried again but it also ended in divorce.
She was a hard worker. She moved to Watertown and ran rooming houses for years, eventually establishing the Abbott Rest Home. She lived in Watertown for over 50 years. After an extended illness she spent her last years in a nursing home.
