Newsoms, VA — Bernice Ricks Duke, 87, died Monday, March 18, 2002, at Southampton Memorial Hospital, Franklin, after a long period of declining health. She was born Nov. 19, 1914, in Northampton County, NC, the daughter of the late Richard Sidney Ricks and Maude Odom Ricks. She was the widow of Robert L. Duke Sr. and mother of the late Robert Lee Duke Jr. She was a member of Newsoms United Methodist Church and had served as pianist at the church. She retired in 1977 after 30 years of teaching third through eighth grades in public schools in Louisburg, Conway, Winston-Salem, Murfreesboro, and Boykins and the city of Franklin.

Survivors include her daughter-in-law, Dr. Linda W. Duke of Prattville, AL; two granddaughters, Elizabeth Ruth Duke of Huntington, WV, and Kathryn Bernice Duke of Durham, NC; a sister, Louise Barrett of Littleton, NC; a brother-in-law, Ben White Sr. of Raleigh, NC; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Dr. Gary Hartman will hold a funeral at 11 a.m. Thursday in Newsoms United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Hollywood Cemetery, Newsoms.
